STREAMWOOD — West Aurora boys track coach Cortney Lamb broke out the new uniforms and got the same old result, which was a very good thing.

The well-rounded Blackhawks did it again, piling up 110 points Friday night at Millennium Field to win the Kane County Boys Track and Field Meet for the fourth straight year in the 93rd running of the event.

“The seniors wanted to go out undefeated,” said Lamb, who got wins from Alex Chollet in the discus (164-3), Matt Souvannasing in the long jump (22-1) and his 3,200-meter relay (8:06.07) and 800 relay (1:30.26) units.

“This is a great meet, one of the oldest in the state and we really mark this on our calendar because it’s the first of what I call our ‘championship season’ that consists of the county, conference, sectional and state meets,” continued Lamb.

“The competition here is great. There are great 3A and 2A teams here and it’s on par with a sectional.”

Batavia coach Dennis Piron also broke out new uniforms and his team responded with a second-place finish, scoring 82.5 points. Even better, the Bulldogs went out in style in the final race of the night, winning the 1,600 relay in 3:20.99 to break a 26-year-old meet record.

Emund Kabba, Rob Mohr (who also won the 300 low hurdles), Jake Benner and Dave Voland made up the unit that set a blistering pace.

“That was fun, holy cow,” said Piron. “I was excited about that. That was fast.”

It broke the mark of 3:21.9 (converted to 3:22.04 fully automatic time) set in 1985 by East Aurora’s team of Tracy Drew, Larry Ramsey, Curtis Hudson and Andy Toma.

Brian Wilson posted Batavia’s other win, taking the shot put with a throw of 53-11.

St. Charles North (62), Kaneland (57) and St. Charles East (49) rounded out the top five. Geneva (42) was seventh, Aurora Central (17) 11th and East Aurora (1) 13th.

“Our kids stepped up nicely tonight,” said Lamb. “We were led off really well by the field events. They were dominant as we went 2-3 in the pole vault, 1-2 in the discus, 2-3 in the shot put and Matt (Souvannasing) in the long jump.

“It got us off to a great start and the kids kept rolling from there.”

Senior Elawrence Langston launched a personal record discus throw of 163-10 to finish second to Chollett and they reversed in the shot put with Langston’s throw of 53-4 taking second and Chollet’s 49-8 third.

George Malina (13-9) and Royce Golenbeck (13-3) were second and third in the pole vault.

Vontrel Hawkins, Matt Muth, Zach Truckenbrod and Ryan Bartell took the 3,200 relay while Souvannasing, Rodney Cooper, Mike Graham and Zach Woods teamed up to win the 800 relay.

“The four by eight was a little scary at the end,” said Lamb. “It’s the same guys who qualified for state last year so they know how to run in meets like this and they ran their fastest time of the year.

“(Anchor runner) Bartell got the baton with the lead and then he got passed and we’re all yelling at him and he comes back in the last 100 and gets it. Of course, he has to make it interesting and scare the coaches instead of taking it and winning it.”

Taylor Andrews had Kaneland’s only win of the night, topping a stellar field in the 110-meter high hurdles, winning in a season best 14.38 seconds.

Marmion Academy’s Eddy Grahovec won the 800 in 1:58.21 for the Cadets’ lone win and Russell Acton took the 400 in 49.16 for the Vikings’ lone win.
