Three Things WE KNOW

Emma Spagnola makes an emphatic statement. The West Aurora standout won all four of her events last week at DG North’s Bruce Ritter Invitational. The senior’s win in 14.45 seconds in the 100 hurdles moved to the top of DyeStatIL.com’s rankings for the state and also was a “national elite” effort that ties for 55th in the country. Her 18-9 win in the long jump? It ranks second in the state and 18th nationally.

Two area high jumpers are climbing the charts. Yorkville’s Rachel Augius and Oswego East’s Morganne Jones, both juniors, both cleared 5 feet, 6 inches in winning at their respective home invitationals last weekend. Moline’s Rose Gamamou has cleared 5-6.5 to lead the state but Augius and Jones are among five tied for second at 5-6.

Three invites bear watching. Metea Valley hosts the Valley Invite Friday that includes sister schools Waubonsie and Neuqua as well as Oswego East in a strong eight-team field. East Aurora joins four other teams Saturday at Batavia’s six-team invitational that starts at 9 a.m. Also Saturday, Peyton Wade of Aurora Christian joins Mooseheart, Somonauk, Big Rock’s Crossroads Christian as well as a team from Lowell, Ind., at an 11-team co-ed invitational hosted by Plano (10 a.m.)
