Three Things WE KNOW
East Aurora owns 3,200 at Elgin. Tomcats distance runners Felipe Nino, David Galran and Diego Gutierrrez propelled East Aurora to a clean sweep of the 3,200-meter run at the Elgin A-B-C meet last week. Nino, a cross country state qualifier, captured the top division with a posting of 10 minutes, 32.86 seconds. Galran (10:58.39) won the middle tier and Gutierrez (11:08.11) followed suit in the third heat.
Jason D’Amico eyes school record. D’Amico, a Geneva senior, is hovering around an automatic bid to the state meet in the discus after winning the Vikings’ invitational last weekend with a throw of 151 feet, 10 inches. “I’m going after the school record,” said D’Amico, who also won the shot put. Justin Toarmina led Geneva’s 1-2 finish in the long jump with 21-feet even. Burlington Central edged the Vikings for the team title in the last event.
Joe Chavez falls at wire. Chavez, a West Aurora senior, was tantalizingly close to denying Dan Lathrop a second title at the Blackhawks’ invitational last week. Chavez set a new personal record of 4 minutes, 27.88 seconds in the open 1,600 run, only to fall by less than two-tenths of a second to the University of Illinois-bound star from Plainfield South.
